IVF Babble

“Things like this never happen to people like me”, by Lucy, our free IVF Winner

It was such an incredible phone call to make…a call to Lucy, one of the lucky entrants whose name was selected at random to have a free round of IVF at The Fertility Partnership, to tell her that her name had been chosen. It was even more incredible when we discovered that Lucy had been denied IVF on the NHS because her partner has children from a previous relationship.

Lucy, can you tell us how you felt when you got that phone call from us, and realised that you were going to be given a free round of IVF and that your journey was about to begin?

When I saw the initial text I couldn’t quite believe it, as I had just come out of a funeral. I just remember bursting into tears! I couldn’t even think straight. All I remember saying to my husband was “IVF!!”….. this is our chance and our gift from Nanny:(

Can you tell us about your journey so far?

We have been TTC for 6 years, and have always been told it’s because I have PCOS. Recently though, they discovered i have fibroids. My husband has children from a previous marriage so we do not qualify for IVF on the NHS, although we have tried Clomid and gondopholin injections as that is all that we are entitled to on the NHS.
It is absolutely heart breaking and frustrating that I am denied the chance to become a mum, simply because my husband had children from a previous relationship. Just because he has children, why should I be denied the right to be a mum 🙁

How has your journey made you feel so far?

My journey so far has made me feel like a failure because I am unable to have the one thing in life that I want the chance to experience.

Do you have a strong group of friends and family around you or have you found TTC an isolating experience?

I have a strong immediate family network and without their love and support I don’t know how I would have got through the continued knock backs and upsetting hospital visits.

Had you not have been given this free round of IVF, what would your next steps have been?

I had started to be at peace with the fact that I may never have the chance to be a mum and would probably have ended up getting another dog 🙂 or having an extra special holiday or spa weekend away.

Now that you DO (YES!!) have this free round, what do you need to do now/what are the next steps?

I have my first appointment in October with the consultant and we are due to start all being well in early January

What are your plans for the next 3 months?

I want to get myself physically and emotionally ready. I have started to change my diet already. I want to get back into walking and to get my BMI down so I can be as ready as possible 🙂 I sometimes have to keep pinching myself as I never ever thought this would happen! I am always used to helping others and will always put everyone before myself. Things like this never happen to people like me 🙂

No words can ever express my thanks and gratitude for this chance, in making my dreams that bit more of a reality 🙂 I would never have thought that I would get a chance like this it is like winning the lottery 🙂
