A Scottish couple have thanked the woman who became their surrogate and enabled them to become parents for a second time
Ami and Stuart Geddes, from Erskine, lost their son after he was born 15 weeks early, and Ami was told she may not survive another pregnancy.
Father Stuart described how he felt helpless as his wife and baby battled for life in January 2021.
He said: “I watched my wife almost lose her life. My little boy had to be delivered to save Ami’s life, basically. He was too premature.
“Unfortunately, his lungs weren’t developed enough.”
The child, they named Clark, died after fighting for his life for 12 days.
The couple, who already had a son, four-year-old Camdyn, said the arrival of their daughter, Connie, had completed their family.
Connie was born on Friday, August 18, weighing 8lb 6oz.
She said: “Our embryos weren’t the problem, it was my body reacting to carrying children.
“We could make really lovely, beautiful, amazing babies, but we just couldn’t carry them full term.
“We were shocked to the core that we’ve got these amazing little people in our lives, and Jen has completed our family.”
The Jen they talk of is their surrogate mother, a student midwife who offered to carry their baby after hearing about their story through a friend.
Jennifer said: “I feel like knowing the heartbreak of what they were going through, and how lucky I have been to carry my babies with no complications, it really just did make me want to help them and give them that joy.
“It felt like any normal pregnancy of mine, but I had that detachment in my head that this was their baby, it was their happiness. I’m just keeping this baby safe for them.”
Ami said: “Jen has made all our dreams come true, and we have made a friend for life.”
