The world was shocked in May 2021 when supermodel Naomi Campbell welcomed a baby girl
She recently told British Vogue that her daughter, pictured in a lavish photo spread, was hers. So, now many media outlets are wondering – just how did Naomi Campbell have a baby?
A recent article in the Daily Mail shares some of the most likely options, including hiding a bump and using a surrogate to carry the baby.
Naomi, who did not reveal her daughter’s name, said, “she’s my child.”
Now, of course, that does not mean the little one is not adopted. Many adoptive parents refer to their children as ‘theirs,’ after all. But Naomi is known for her candour – and there was something about her phrasing that convinced everyone that her baby is genetically hers.
Here are some of the most common theories:
- She used her own previously frozen eggs and donor sperm to undergo IVF and carry the child herself, concealing her bump with flowy clothing
- She used a previously frozen embryo or eggs and had a gestational surrogate carry the pregnancy
- She fell pregnant naturally and had a petite bump, though experts say this is extremely unlikely at her age
Commentators have been scrutinising photos of Naomi in the weeks and months before her baby arrived
She walked the catwalk at a Michael Kors show in New York just five and half weeks earlier. While she appears slim, she is wearing an A-line dress that covers her frame. Experts say this garment could be concealing a small bump, which would be likely for someone with her physique.
According to baby and parenting expert Rachel Fitzd, “it looks to me as if she really could have been pregnant
Some women barely show at all until the later stages of pregnancy, especially if they are tall, and the way a baby is lying and the clothes we choose to wear can have a big impact on how pregnant we look.”
Even if she did carry her own child, natural conception is unlikely. Professor Luciano Nardo states, “although it is possible to conceive naturally at 50, the chances are very slim.” That’s because after the age of 30, female fertility starts to decline. Most women have gone through the menopause by the time they are 50, so while it’s not impossible for Naomi to have become pregnant through intercourse, it would be extremely rare.
Even if Naomi went through IVF with her own eggs, her success would be highly unlikely. Therefore, it’s likely that she froze her eggs at a younger age. After all, four years ago she raved about science giving her the ability to have a family whenever she wanted – perhaps she was referring to freezing her eggs when she was younger? This seems to be the most likely answer.
No matter how the precious little girl came into being, Naomi is clearly over the moon and she doesn’t owe anyone an explanation about how she had her baby
Naomi says to Vogue “I always knew that one day I would be a mother, but it’s the biggest joy I could ever imagine. I’m lucky to have her and I know that.”
She also shared that very few people even knew that she was planning to have a child: “I can count on one hand the number of people who knew that I was having her. But she is the biggest blessing I could ever imagine. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
We wish her all the happiness in the world – love and congratulations from all of us at IVFbabble!
