Mum welcomes 'miracle baby' after eight miscarriages

A Scottish woman has welcomed what she is describing as her ‘miracle baby’ after suffering eight miscarriages and a failed round of IVF

Sam Mace, 43, was already mum to four-year-old Freddie, an IVF baby but longed for another and spent £7,000 on fertility tests and IVF with her husband John, also 43.

After years of heartache, the pair accepted they would not become parents again, but miraculously Sam discovered she was pregnant with Charlotte, now 15-months-old.

The pilates teacher told the Scottish Mirror Charlotte was a ‘complete surprise’.

She said: “I had been through such a traumatic fertility journey, including losing two embryos following IVF treatment, to an ectopic pregnancy and miscarriages.

“It was early in 2020, around February, and my periods had become irregular. I thought I was menopausal, and I even went to my GP for tests. Then I noticed my sense of smell was heightened and I felt very nauseous.

“I did a pregnancy test and went into shock when I saw it was positive. To think of everything else we had been through to get here, Charlottle was worth the wait, she has completed our family.”

Sam, who is also a proud stepmother to 12-year-old Lilly, said she didn’t qualify for help on the NHS for IVF as she was able to conceive naturally but could never hold onto the pregnancy.

After a series of heartbreaks, Sam decided to get immunology tests at a clinic and went through a round of IVF that resulted in the birth of her first child, Freddie.

Two years later the couple implanted the embryo leftover but sadly it did not stick.

After that heartache, the couple decided to end their fertility journey and be happy with their lot in life.

Then, Charlotte came along as a lovely surprise two years after they had stopped fertility treatment.

Sam said: “Our little miracle. I never thought I would reach the day in which I am blessed with two rainbow babies.”
