IVF Babble
endometriosis awareness

Listening to my body after 26 years, by Sarah

Following a visit to her doctor as a young girl, to discuss the vomiting, and fainting, and stabbing pains (amongst other horrific side effects) that she was experiencing leading up to and during her period, Sarah Roberts left the clinic having simply been given the contraceptive pill and absolutely no explanation as to why she was suffering so badly. As a result, she thought that what she was experiencing was normal.

It is only now that she knows that wasn’t the case. She now knows she has endometriosis

Desperate to become a mother some time later, Sarah tried to fall pregnant, but sadly it just wasn’t happening. So, she underwent fertility treatment, but again, this didn’t work. As you will here in this interview, endometriosis was never even mentioned prior to having IVF the first time, nor the second.

It was only when Sarah visited an acupuncturist, did things start to change. As Sarah spoke of her symptoms, the acupuncturist immediately said to her “ah, so you have endometriosis?”. It was the first time anyone had mentioned the condition to her.

So what is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb (endometrium) is found elsewhere, usually in the pelvis around the womb, on the ovaries, tubes, ligaments holding the pelvic organs in place as well as occasionally the bowel or bladder

It can affect up to one in ten women and can vary massively in severity. It is more common in women with a family history in their mother or sister. When this tissue is found within the muscle of the womb it’s called adenomyosis.

Sarah is now healing

With the help of her acupuncturist, Sarah is now learning more about her body and the ways that she can help it heal. Her symptoms are easing and she feels as though she is getting her life back. She is now determined to make her dreams of motherhood a reality.

We wish Sarah all the love in the world on her journey forwards.
