Lacey Popke is well known in the Fox Cities, an area of Wisconsin in the US, as the first surrogate baby born there
She recently spoke to NBC26.com about her impending motherhood and how it was growing up as a surrogate baby.
She said: “I was told I was a surrogate baby because my mom couldn’t have her own kids. It turns out that her eggs were even rotten.”
Rollback 28 years and her mother Annette’s cousin, Rachel, offered to carry a child for her.
At the time, Lacey said surrogacy was frowned upon by the medical profession but one doctor, John Harris was about to retire and gave them his support to have the much-wanted baby.
Lacey said he passed away before she got the chance to thank him.
She said: “I was mentioned practically in his obituary, and I didn’t even know he had died.”
Lacey is 38 weeks pregnant with a baby girl – who will be named Sierra – and will give birth any day now at the Thedacare Regional Medical Center, in Wisconsin.
Lacey lost her mother and that is her one regret – her mother not being here to be the wonderful grandmother she knows she would be.
She said: “It would be nice to still have her here. So that she could experience having a grandchild.”
