By Sue Bedford (MSc Nutritional Therapy)

It’s that time of year with the nights drawing in and the cold bugs are doing their rounds.  Stave off the autumn bugs by helping to strengthen your immune system with this nutritious and delicious juice. The combination of the amazing ingredients in this juice pack a great nutritional punch which are great to support the immune system, stabilise blood sugar and reduce inflammation – great for our hormones and skin too.

Ginger– Great for giving juices a kick but also to helps to alleviate gastrointestinal issues, plays a role in reducing inflammation in the body, supports the immune system, rejuvenates skin and increases energy levels. It also contains anti- microbial properties. Ginger contains many important nutrients and vitamins including vitamin C, B5 and B6, along with a good amount of the mineral’s potassium, manganese, copper, and magnesium.

Turmeric -is an adaptogen (support the body’s natural ability to deal with stress) and contains a powerful compound called Curcumin which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Did you know that the bioavailability of turmeric is increased when it is combined with black pepper- so why not add a pinch to your juice?

Fresh orange juice- is fantastic nutritionally as it contains plenty of vitamin C, vitamin D,  folate, potassium and thiamine (vitamin B1). It also keeps you hydrated and is great for supporting the immune system.

Lemons – are abundant in vitamin C and flavonoids, both powerful antioxidants, important in preventing free radical damage to cells, supporting the immune system, for skin health, increasing iron absorption from food, weight loss and the prevention of scurvy.

Honey – possesses an array of plant chemicals that act as antioxidants. It also contains antibacterial and antifungal properties (in particular raw and manuka honey).

These ingredients combined pack a great nutritional punch that not only provides us with immune system support but is also fab for dry skin too.
