US singer and presenter Adrienne Bailon-Houghton has described her journey to motherhood as ‘quiet’ but that it kept her on her toes
The former co-host of The Real appeared on the Jennifer Hudson Show at the end of December to speak about having her son via surrogacy and her fertility issues.
“It took me six years to have my son,” she told Jennifer. “And for such a long time, it was a quiet journey that I just had with myself because it was really hard. I didn’t expect it to be so hard to have a child.”
Her husband, Israel Houghton, and Adrienne welcomed Eer James in August 2022.
They decided to keep their surrogate pregnancy a secret from the world.
The couple tried for six years to conceive, including eight cycles of IVF and several miscarriages.
They had one embryo remaining and her doctor introduced the idea of having a surrogate carry it.
She talked about her not initially liking the idea of having a surrogate carry her child, but they went ahead and now she could not be more thankful.
She said: “I’m not going to lie, it just wasn’t what I imagined would be my journey.
“But when I held my son. After he was delivered, by me, I put him straight onto me and we did skin-to-skin.”
Adrienne said she felt women who suffer from infertility should not suffer in silence.
She said: “I think women who don’t really talk about fertility issues, but if you bring it up at the table everyone’s going to be like, ‘girl, me too! What are you doing?'”
“I didn’t realise that until we were going through it.”
