A pioneering blood test can diagnose endometriosis in 90 per cent of cases, new research has revealed
The study was conducted by MDNA Life Sciences and showed that a simple blood test to detect tiny DNA fragments could spare thousands of women from invasive surgery for diagnosis.
According to Endometriosis UK, it can take about seven years to diagnose endometriosis with ten per cent of women suffering with the condition.
Researchers have said they hope to create a blood testing kit in the near future with the cost being in the region of £250
Emma Cox, CEO of Endometriosis UK said the charity welcomed new research.
She said: “Endometriosis is a much under researched area.
“While the research released is an interesting study, it is a trial with a small sample size, and a much bigger study covering a diverse range of demographics would be needed to validate the findings.
Although a non-surgical test for endometriosis is urgently needed, we should not offer false hopes to women who may have already suffered for many years.
Women deserve an accurate and readily available test free via the NHS, when a test is developed. Women with the disease already face a financial burden due to loss of earnings and it’s not fair to add to this by only offering pioneering treatment and diagnosis options to those who can afford to pay for it”.
