The former star of reality television show, Real Housewives of Orange County, Gretchen Rossi, is pregnant with her first child with long time partner, Slade Smiley
She told PEOPLE! that she was delighted.
“It’s pretty exciting that we have our little Christmas miracle.”
The couple, who have been together for ten years in 2019, had begun fertility treatment four years ago, but knew it would be a struggle due to Slade’s vasectomy years ago.
During their first round of IVF they had 14 embryos but when she was due to have her first transfer, her fertility doctor called and said they had ‘arrested and basically died’.
She said: “We were just beyond devastated. I couldn’t even get out of bed because you just go from such a high thinking within the next 24 hours you were going to be pregnant to losing everything and losing 14 embryos. That was really, really hard for me and Slade to come out of that.”
Gretchen said she went into a deep depression and said she couldn’t even talk about IVF or pregnancy.
She recently called out other celebrities who have been through fertility for not being open about their journey.
On Gretchen’s 38th birthday, Slade scheduled vasectomy reversal surgery, but after 18 months of trying to conceive the procedure didn’t work for them.
The couple decided to try IVF again and after two rounds only managed to create a handful of genetically sound embryos.
It was around Slade’s 50th birthday that the couple got the happy news that they were expecting and are due in July 2019.
While their journey has been stressful and heartbreaking at times, Gretchen believes it has brought the couple closer together.
She said: “Now we have realised how much closer we’ve come through this process. When you’re having your partner having to shoot you in the ass every morning with the needle and when you’re going through as many shots as you’re going through and mood swings and the ups and the downs and just everything, it definitely bonds you together and brings you back together.”
