First surrogate pregnancy | 1985

A woman carries the first successful surrogate pregnancy as a ‘gestational’.

A year later, an American surrogate and biological mother, Mary Beth Whitehead, refuses to give custody of ‘Baby M’ to the couple with whom she made the surrogacy agreement.

The courts declared that Whitehead was the child’s legal mother but awards custody to the child’s biological  father and his wife.
