Former supermodel Tyra Banks talks about the pain of infertility

Tyra Banks reveals struggles with IVF

“Since I was 24, I used to say every year, ‘I will have kids in three years.’ I kept saying it over and over again.” But as the former supermodel and businesswoman became busier with work commitments, that kept getting pushed back. When she did start trying she realised it wasn’t going to be easy.

Tyra Bank’s story is one of many years of trying without success, then embarking on IVF – which sadly didn’t work either. She told People Magazine: “I’ve had some not happy moments with that (IVF), very traumatic moments, it’s difficult as you get older. It’s not something that can just happen.”

Her decision to try for a baby with a surrogate resulted in the birth of a son in February 2016.

“The best present we worked and prayed so hard for is finally here.”

Tyra said publicly: “He’s got my fingers and big eyes and his daddy Erik’s mouth and chin. As we thank the angel of a woman that carried our miracle baby boy for us, we pray for everyone who struggles to reach this joyous milestone. York Banks Asla, welcome to the world.”

Infertility affects one in six people worldwide and the shock and upset of discovering you cannot conceive is extremely harrowing.

Motherhood is often taken for granted, but we forget that there is a cut-off point, when fertility becomes harder and harder. Living busy lives, we may not stop to think that we may have an underlying and undiagnosed issue that until resolved will hold us back on our dream of becoming a mother.
